Apollo

Apollo stands in the French Rondel of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, among marble figures beside the Great Fountain. You see a youthful god holding a tablet.

François Gaspard Adam created the sculpture in the elegant, dynamic style of the Rococo. Installed in the mid-eighteenth century, it belongs to a circle of twelve life-size marble figures commissioned by Frederick the Great. The group includes eight Roman deities and the four elements, created by French sculptors for the Prussian court.

An inscription from Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura connects the figure with nature and knowledge. Venus Urania stands as its counterpart. Together, the two figures express the pursuit of knowledge through beauty and love, while their polished marble and animated poses suggest movement. The surrounding setting is wheelchair accessible.
