Alter Markt
Alter Markt stands in Potsdam, Germany, as a central square surrounded by notable historic buildings. St Nicholas’ Church rises beside the City Palace.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the classicist church, built between 1830 and 1837. A marble obelisk marks the centre. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff originally designed it, and restoration returned the monument to the square in 2014. The City Palace began in 1666 and was reconstructed in 2013.
War damage destroyed much of the square, while reconstruction restored its historical appearance. The Old City Hall houses the Potsdam Museum. Across the square, Museum Barberini occupies a replica of the former Barberini Palace, which opened in 2017. The central obelisk gives the scene its clearest focal point.
