Hospital de Santo António - Edifício Neoclássico

Hospital de Santo António - Edifício Neoclássico stands in Porto as part of the Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António. Its neoclassical façade presents symmetry, pilasters, cornices, and balanced proportions inspired by classical architecture. Inside, consultation rooms and administrative offices support outpatient care and specialist medical services. Ophthalmology, psychiatry, and diabetic foot care are among the departments housed there.

The building also connects medical practice with teaching, research, and Porto’s history of healthcare. Its relationship with the University of Porto’s Faculty of Medicine appears through exhibitions and academic activities. One exhibition, A Casa da Medicina – Criação e Legado da FMUP, explored the development of medical education in Porto. Historical documents and objects traced the path from the Royal School of Surgery of Porto to the modern Faculty of Medicine.

The Salão Nobre provides a formal setting for exhibitions and institutional events. Within the wider hospital complex, this building brings together a working clinical environment and spaces preserving medical heritage. Its symmetrical design gives a civic character to a place where consultations, education, and historical memory meet.
