Veste Oberhaus

Veste Oberhaus rises above Passau, with stone walls overlooking the old town and the meeting point of three rivers. Founded in 1219, the fortress grew across eight centuries into a vast complex above the city.

The Oberhausmuseum fills the historic walls with exhibitions on medieval life, regional history and Passau’s role as a trading centre. The displays also explain the fortress’s construction and its part in defending the city. An eighteenth-century observation tower now holds a multimedia exhibition across several floors. From its platform, you can see the Danube, Inn and Ilz converging below.

The Gothic frescoes in St George’s Chapel add a vivid detail to the fortified grounds. Another viewpoint, the Linde battery, looks across Passau, while Oberhauser Leite brings hiking trails and local wildlife nearby. Families can follow riddles with Pilgrim, a kestrel mascot, and clear Wednesday evenings may reveal stars from the small observatory on Neuwall.
