St. Nepumuk

St. Nepumuk is a monument in Passau, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet amid historic buildings and religious landmarks. Dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, it stands near other sites that shape the city’s walking routes and riverside character.

Saint John lived in the fourteenth century and became known as a martyr, protector of bridges and guardian against drowning and floods. The monument connects that tradition with Passau’s experience of major floods and its longstanding role as a religious centre. Nearby churches, monasteries and the Dreiflusseeck place it within a wider landscape of history and faith.

Look for the saint’s familiar attributes: a starry halo or a cross, details shared by many Nepomuk monuments across Europe.
