Spitalkirche St. Johann

Spitalkirche St. Johann stands in Passau as a historic church linked to a medieval hospital foundation. Its interior opens beneath a cross vault, with two parallel naves creating an unusual, spacious arrangement. A chapel on the northern side adds another distinct architectural element.

The cathedral chapter founded the hospital in 1198, and construction of the church began during the same year. The hospital passed to the city in 1278 and later continued as a senior citizens’ home. Most of the building visible today dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while restoration between 1860 and 1864 reshaped much of the interior in the neo-Gothic style.

Pointed arches and decorative furnishings now frame older traces of the church’s medieval structure. A fifteenth-century relief shows Christ between Mary and John in raised sculpture. That surviving artwork offers a direct glimpse of late medieval religious art within a nineteenth-century setting.
