Severinstor

Severinstor is a historic city gate in Passau, marking the former western entrance to the Innstadt district. Its construction took place between 1408 and 1412. The gate belonged to the Innstadt fortifications, which once protected this part of Passau beside the Beiderwiesbach stream. The surviving structure is the gate’s outer barbican. You can find this defensive work near Severinskirche, its cemetery, and the street called Am Severinstor. The main gate tower was demolished in 1820. The nearby Peichterturm, a round tower built in 1403, and former Roman fort Boiotro add earlier layers to the site. Passau records the Severinstor under the name Peichtertor too. A wooden drawbridge once crossed the moat and stream, before the stone Severinsbrücke replaced it in 1898. Restorations followed in the 1970s and from 1986 to 1988. The surviving wall sections and towers show how Passau’s medieval defences shaped the Innstadt landscape. Severinstor preserves a visible architectural trace of that history.
