Domplatz

Domplatz stands before St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Passau’s historic old town, at the city’s highest point. Fine gravel, pastel façades, and decorative late-Baroque details shape the view around you.

Completed in 1150, the square became public in 1824 beside Maximilian I of Bavaria’s statue. Italian architects rebuilt surrounding clerical houses after fires in 1662 and 1680. The paving changed in 2013, while evening lighting focuses attention on the cathedral façade and leaves nearby buildings in half-light. Passau’s position at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz gives the setting a distinctive geographical character.

A Saturday market brings fresh produce, cheese, sausage, handmade pasta, honey, and regional goods to the cathedral’s foreground. Since 2004, the Christkindlesmarkt has added decorated stalls, crafts, food, and seasonal treats during the weeks before Christmas.
