Burg Reschenstein

Burg Reschenstein rises on a wooded ridge beside a loop of the Ilz near Hals, in Passau. From the valley, tall trees conceal most of the medieval castle, leaving the keep as its clearest visible feature.

First recorded in 1384 as an outpost of Burg Hals, the fortress grew around a square keep measuring about eight metres across. A thick shield wall, a straight approach ramp, gates, courtyards and bastions once carried the defences towards the highest rock. Noble families, the Passau bishopric, the Leuchtenberg landgraves and the Wittelsbach dukes successively shaped its history. After a fire in 1622, the valley residence replaced the older stronghold, which later supplied stone for the parish church in Hals. Franz Stockbauer rebuilt parts of the ruin as a country residence in 1907, while a lightning strike in 1994 destroyed much of the remaining interior.

Only the roofed and restored keep remains usable, while the other structures stand as ruins or have vanished. The privately owned grounds are closed, but nearby paths follow the Ilz and climb towards the ridge. From the Triftsperre or the Ries, the Stockbauer Tower appears between the trees.
