Simón Bolívar

Simón Bolívar stands on a pedestal along Cours la Reine, near Pont Alexandre-III in Paris’s eighth arrondissement. The bronze rider presents Bolívar on horseback above the pedestal. Emmanuel Frémiet shaped the sculpture in bronze as a portrait of the Venezuelan military leader.

Bolívar helped lead independence movements in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia against Spanish rule. He was born in Venezuela in 1783. Education in France and Spain influenced the revolutionary ideas associated with his political and military career. Bogotá commissioned this fourth copy of Frémiet’s original work in the early twentieth century.

Latin American republics gave the sculpture to Paris in 1930, commemorating Bolívar’s centenary of death. The Place de la Porte-de-Champerret first held the sculpture. In 1980, the bronze moved to Cours la Reine, near the bridge. Frémiet also created Paris’s equestrian statue of Joan of Arc.
