Ludwig Van Beethoven

In Paris, Ludwig Van Beethoven appears as a bronze sculpture by the French sculptor Emile Antoine Bourdelle. The work measures 68 by 34 by 35 centimetres with its plinth. Created between 1902 and 1903, it shows the composer with a serious, introspective expression and wild hair. Wheelchair access makes the artwork suitable for visitors with mobility needs.

Bourdelle’s fascination with Beethoven shaped around eighty sculptures and many drawings and watercolours of the composer. He also presented this version at the 1903 Salon in Paris. The sculpture reflects his shift towards rougher, more expressive forms after 1901. Bourdelle once compared their bond to that of two wrestlers who never parted.
