Le Triomphe de la République
Le Triomphe de la République stands in the Marianne Garden at Place de la Nation, between Paris’s eleventh and twelfth arrondissements. Aimé-Jules Dalou created this monumental bronze for the French Republic. Its central figure rides a chariot pulled by two lions, while the Spirit of Liberty carries a torch. A bronze globe rests directly beneath Marianne’s feet. The monument combines Liberty, popular strength, and republican symbols in one arrangement of figures.
A Parisian municipal competition began this project. Dalou’s proposal placed second at first, yet the jury and city pursued it through twenty years of work. The plaster model was inaugurated during the French Revolution centennial. The completed bronze presents a blacksmith for Work, a woman for Justice, and flowers for Peace, also called Abundance. A nearby sculpted blacksmith holds a hammer. Marianne stands on a fasces and wears a Phrygian cap, while the globe beneath her suggests the Republic’s universal reach. Children carry a book, scales, and cornucopia.
