La Peinture
La Peinture is a stone statue in Paris’s Jardin du Luxembourg, created by the sculptor Jules Franceschi. The figure rises two and a half metres above its pedestal. It presents an allegorical figure connected with painting, within a historic setting of art and nature.
Franceschi first showed the work at the Salon of 1889 before it found its place in the gardens. He was born in 1825 and studied under François Rude. He later became a naturalised French sculptor, known for busts and allegorical statues in Paris. His public commissions included work for the Palais du Louvre and the Hôtel de Ville. His work also appeared in various historic buildings across Paris.
The Jardin du Luxembourg lies in Paris’s sixth arrondissement and gives the sculpture a setting shaped by paths and planting. The stone figure’s height remains its clearest physical detail beside the garden. The spot is accessible to wheelchair users.
