L'Effort

L'Effort stands among the greenery of the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, where this lead statue brings Greek mythology into a historic public garden. Pierre Roche, the sculptor who worked under the name Fernand Massignon, shows Hercules diverting the river Alpheus during one of his twelve labors.

Completed in the early twentieth century, the work began as part of a fountain project that budget constraints left unrealized. The statue entered the garden in 1902, while Roche also designed the surrounding rocks to extend the mythological scene. Its wheelchair-accessible setting places the sculpture within a garden known for its landscapes and many statues.

Look closely at Hercules in motion, directing the river through a feat linked to the Augean stables. The unused fountain survives as a quiet piece of the sculpture’s history.
