Jardin du Palais Royal

Jardin du Palais Royal occupies the first arrondissement of Paris, within the Palais Royal complex, where four arcaded galleries surround trees, paths, and a central pool. Lime and chestnut trees shade peaceful walks.

Pierre Desgotz laid out the garden in 1633 for Cardinal Richelieu, beside his residence, then called Palais Cardinal. Charles X later gave the grounds their present layout. The Galerie de Montpensier, Galerie de Beaujolais, Galerie de Valois, and Galerie du Jardin define its four sides. Contemporary art stands near the entrance in Daniel Buren’s Les Deux Plateaux, while statues include Le Charmeur de serpent and Le Pâtre et la Chèvre.

The Allée Colette and Allée Cocteau joined the garden’s paths in 2019, alongside a Wallace fountain and a commemorative plaque. A small bronze cannon, invented by Rousseau in 1785, once regulated Parisian clocks by firing at noon.
