Jardin des Plantes
The Jardin des Plantes stands in Paris as France’s main botanical garden, covering twenty-eight hectares. King Louis XIII established it there in 1635. The site began as the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants for cultivation and study. Research and education continue through its botanical school.
The site houses the National Museum of Natural History, whose galleries examine evolution, minerals, geology, palaeontology, anatomy, and botany. One gallery presents the theme of evolution. Further galleries cover mineral specimens, comparative anatomy, and nearly eight million botanical samples. Its herbarium is the world’s largest.
The Ménagerie, founded in 1795, includes animals from the former royal menagerie at Versailles. An Alpine garden contains three thousand species. A rose garden displays hundreds of varieties, while specialised greenhouses present plants from Mexico and Australia. Seed exchanges and demonstration gardens support biodiversity.
