Immeuble des frères Perret stands on rue Franklin near the Trocadéro, in Paris’s sixteenth arrondissement. Gustave and Auguste Perret designed this residential building between 1903 and 1904 on a narrow plot, using reinforced concrete when the material remained experimental.
Its U-shaped plan surrounds a 12-square-metre courtyard at the façade, giving the apartments broad views across Paris. Ten floors contain homes arranged around living rooms, with dining rooms, bedrooms and projecting boudoirs, while the ground floor held the Perret design studio. A free structural frame reduced the need for interior walls, and the rear staircase, lift and service stair are enclosed by hexagonal honeycomb tiles.
The main façade balances geometric proportions with ceramic panels by Alexandre Bigot, whose floral patterns bring Art Nouveau detail to the concrete structure. At the top, a rooftop terrace occupies the noble floor, with views towards the Seine, Longchamp, Saint-Cloud, Mont Valérien, the Marly aqueduct and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
