Hôtel de Vitry
Hôtel de Vitry stands on the northern side of Place des Vosges, in Paris’s third arrondissement. Its position places it east of Hôtel de Tresmes, within the square’s regular architectural setting.
The hôtel particulier dates from the early seventeenth century, when Paris developed new forms of urban architecture. Place des Vosges began in 1605 and was completed in 1612, two years after Henri IV’s assassination. Red-brick façades and white-stone details create the uniform appearance surrounding the square. The façades and roofs received protection as historic monuments in 1920. The gallery facing the square and the entrance-door panels gained the same recognition in 1956.
