Hôtel de Ville
Hôtel de Ville stands on Place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, in Paris’s fourth arrondissement, as the city’s municipal headquarters. Its site has centred Parisian administration since 1357. The original Renaissance building rose between 1535 and 1628, after Étienne Marcel acquired the House of Pillars for Paris. Fire destroyed the building during the Paris Commune. Reconstruction began in 1874, and architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes retained the Renaissance façade while enlarging the structure. The rebuilt interior follows the ceremonial style of the 1880s. Sculptures of notable Parisians cover the façade, including works by Auguste Rodin. Inside, Salle des fêtes forms a ballroom inspired by Versailles’s Hall of Mirrors. The Salon des Arcades divides into sections devoted to arts, sciences and letters, while grand rooms support ceremonial occasions. The mayor’s office and municipal council occupy the building. The building has witnessed the French Revolution and the Paris Commune, linking civic architecture with major episodes in Parisian history. Large receptions and public events also take place within its rooms.
