Champ de Mars
Champ de Mars is a large public green space in Paris’s seventh arrondissement, stretching between two distinctive landmarks. The Eiffel Tower rises to its northwest, while the École Militaire stands to its southeast. Broad lawns create an open setting for picnics, gatherings, and views across the surrounding city. The recorded wheelchair access supports visits across the grounds.
Its name recalls Rome’s Campus Martius, dedicated to Mars and echoed by its former military use. The École Militaire shaped the present esplanade. The park later hosted Federation Day, revolutionary festivals, and several Expositions Universelles. Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers launched the first hydrogen-filled balloon here. Modern facilities include a basketball court, a football field, playgrounds, and a puppet theatre. The grounds have also hosted beach volleyball and blind football tournaments.
Concerts, fireworks, and marathons bring organised activity across the lawns. An antique carousel adds a small detail beside the monumental surroundings. After dark, the Eiffel Tower’s light show becomes the park’s most striking nearby spectacle.
