La Criança

La Criança is a sixteenth-century building in Palma, Spain, linked to the city’s history of female education. Antoni Genovard, a canon, founded the institution for daughters from prosperous families. Sor Isabel Cifre later directed the institution and continued its educational purpose. The building’s courtyard contains distinctive octagonal pillars. Their Renaissance form connects the architecture with sixteenth-century craftsmanship in Palma, while the institution reflects education reserved for a privileged group.

Inside this historic setting, young women received preparation for their expected roles in society. That history places the building within Palma’s changing ideas about access to education. The courtyard offers the clearest architectural detail to look for. Its octagonal pillars give the open space a strong visual identity and a direct link to the period.
