Consolat de Mar
Consolat de Mar is a public building in Palma, positioned between the Drassanes and La Llonja. It houses the Presidency of the Balearic Islands government.
Its name recalls the Crown of Aragon’s maritime and commercial tribunal, which operated in Palma’s former seafaring district. The Mallorcan institution settled disputes between merchants and sailors. Built as part of the Merchants’ College complex, the building provided enclosed rooms beside La Llonja’s open hall. The wider complex also included a chapel.
That chapel forms the oldest part, while a Renaissance gallery faces the sea and marks the monumental entrance. Five arches and banded columns shape the gallery. The façade has three levels, and five pedimented doors open onto the main gallery. Inside, the council chamber remains a defining room. Merchants once met there, while the government council gathers in the same space.
Later restoration followed several different institutional uses. Consolat de Mar connects maritime law, merchant life, Gothic detail, Renaissance design, and Balearic government.
