Consell de Mallorca
The Consell de Mallorca is Mallorca’s self-government institution, overseeing island administration through political and administrative bodies. The institution was created in 1978 under the island council regime.
It was officially established through the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands in 1983. The Plenary oversees the council’s decisions and regulations. It approves budgets and regulations, oversees the Executive Council, and elects the president from among its members. The Presidency leads Mallorca’s island government and administration.
The Executive Council carries out responsibilities, while departments manage culture, heritage, environment, infrastructure, social affairs, and youth activities. The council also supports Mallorca’s cultural heritage. Associated organisations work across social programmes, environmental initiatives, cultural events, sports, exhibitions, awards, and educational activities. The GR 221 dry-stone route crosses the Serra de Tramuntana. The Serra de Tramuntana holds UNESCO World Heritage status, linking the council’s work with Mallorca’s protected natural and cultural landscape. Its hybrid structure joins local and regional government functions.
