Antoni Maura
The Monument to Antonio Maura stands in Palma’s Plaça del Mercat, where public art meets the city’s daily life. Mariano Benlliure designed this sculptural ensemble for Antonio Maura, a Spanish prime minister. A bronze Maura stands on a stone pedestal, holding an oratorical pose above the square. Below him, white marble presents an allegory of Truth.
Truth points towards a cartouche carrying the inscription “antonio maura igualó con la vida el pensamiento.” The phrase draws on a verse by Andrés Fernández de Andrada from Epístola moral a Fabio. Public subscription funded the monument, linking its creation to collective support in Palma. A fallen ficus tree damaged the statue, and restoration later returned it to the square. Bronze, white marble, and the literary inscription bring portraiture, symbolism, and political memory together.
