Ajuntament

The Ajuntament, also known as Ayuntamiento de Palma or Cort, serves as Palma’s city hall and a central civic building. Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands.

Its façade combines baroque design with mannerist elements and belongs to the protected cultural heritage of the Balearic capital. Builders completed the Ajuntament between 1649 and 1680.

Architects Pere Bauçá, Miquel Oliver, and Bartomeu Calafat shaped the building during that extended construction period. The Ajuntament’s main balcony extends across seven windows.

The façade also presents Rellotge d’en Figuera and Banc del si no fos, two named features linked with the building. The clock and bench carry distinctive names.

As a public administration, the Ajuntament organizes Palma’s political and administrative functions through elected municipal government and district structures. Palma’s municipal administration includes five organized districts.

Each district has a local council, administrative offices, a municipal board, and a delegate for local representation. The five districts support organized citizen participation.

The city council covers culture, heritage, infrastructure, accessibility, planning, tourism, education, sports, mobility, safety, finance, health, and welfare. Those areas connect city services with civic life.

The Ajuntament therefore joins a protected façade, named architectural details, and the practical work of governing Palma.
