Villa Niscemi

Villa Niscemi stands in Palermo’s Parco della Favorita, beside the former Real Tenuta della Favorita royal hunting reserve. Its three-level main building has a simple façade and two projecting, terraced wings. Built in the eighteenth century on an older agricultural estate, it became the Valguarnera di Niscemi family’s main residence for about three centuries. The surrounding park once offered hunting grounds rich in game and rare animals, especially during the Bourbon exile.

Inside, a two-flight staircase leads from the entrance towards reception rooms, private apartments, and an inner courtyard. Single-storey buildings around the courtyard include former stables and a hall now used as an auditorium. A large fireplace by Giovan Battista Palazzotto and Vincenzo La Parola stands beneath portraits of Sicily’s kings. Trompe-l’œil frescoes show the four seasons, while a 1774 scene depicts Charlemagne granting the family its coat of arms.

The ballroom retains rich furnishings, and the garden follows free-form paths among subtropical plants. Much of the interior layout, decoration, and original furnishing survives, including damasks, paintings, and frescoes. Fulco di Verdura spent his childhood here, later designing jewellery for Coco Chanel in New York. His memories include an artificial duck pond shaped like a river and the scent of oleanders in the garden. Since 1987, Palermo’s municipality has used the villa as its representative office.
