Torre del rotolo

Torre del Rotolo stands on Punta Rotolo, between Addaura and Vergine Maria on Palermo’s seafront. The slender tower overlooks the Gulf of Palermo beside the road towards Mondello. Its coastal setting places it among walking and cycling routes that follow Palermo’s shoreline and historic sites.

Built during the early decades of the fifteenth century, the watchtower formed part of Sicily’s short-range coastal defence network. Lookouts watched the sea. Royal authorities commissioned towers like this one to spot ships or attackers and warn nearby communities. The network included towers at Capo Zafferano, Fico d’India, Punta di Priola, Vergine Maria and Mondello. Their linked positions helped coordinate warnings along the coast.

Reduced dimensions give the structure a simple, primitive appearance, while the absence of heavy artillery and a water cistern limited its defensive strength. The surviving masonry now lies in ruins. From the shoreline, its remains connect Palermo’s Gulf views with the practical history of a coast once guarded from the sea.
