Ruggero Settimo
Ruggero Settimo stands in the centre of a Palermo square, directly before the main entrance to Teatro Politeama Garibaldi. The white Carrara marble statue rises behind a restored iron fence. Benedetto De Lisi created the neoclassical figure, while architect G. Damiani Almejda supervised the project. The surrounding public space continues towards Castelnuovo Square and is often called Piazza Politeama.
The monument entered the square in 1865, commemorating an admiral, politician, and minister of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Dates carved into the pedestal mark Settimo’s service in 1812, his committee work in 1820, and his revolutionary leadership in 1848. That year, he opened the new Sicilian parliament at Palermo’s Church of San Domenico. A ceremonial inauguration brought city authorities, sailors from the royal frigate Tancredi, and students from two Palermo institutions together. After damage to the railing, restoration returned the ironwork to the statue’s immediate surroundings.
