Oberes Tor
The Oberes Tor marks Ochsenfurt’s former eastern entrance from the direction of Marktbreit. The rectangular gate tower rises through five storeys.
The round-arched passage reflects the form used in fourteenth-century city gates. An upper floor projects slightly beneath a bell-shaped roof.
Builders raised the tower in 1567, giving the gate its present height and appearance. Beside it stands a three-storey house with plastered walls and half-timbered upper floors.
Its gabled roof completes the former defensive complex. The building’s core also dates from the fourteenth century, linking the residence with Ochsenfurt’s medieval fortifications.
Those fortifications retain walls, ramparts and a moat, alongside other gates and towers. The Oberes Tor once controlled movement into the town.
Other elements of the network include Klingentor, Unteres Tor, Taubenturm, Dicker Turm and Nikolausturm. The protected monument anchors the historic main street and recalls Ochsenfurt’s medieval system of controlled access.
The Main River helped Ochsenfurt become a centre for trade and travel.
