Volkmarsbergturm
Volkmarsbergturm rises above Volkmarsberg near Oberkochen, in the Swabian Jura, at 743.6 metres above sea level. The reinforced-concrete observation tower stands 23 metres high, with a square base and viewing platform above the Ostalb landscape. On clear days, the view can reach the Zugspitze, around 180 kilometres away.
The present structure dates from 1930, replacing a wooden tower destroyed by a storm in 1911. Its seven-by-seven-metre base and six-by-six-metre platform give the summit a strong, geometric presence. Protected juniper heath surrounds the tower, preserving former sheep pasture alongside ancient beeches, oaks and lindens. Yellow meadow ants also inhabit this reserve, adding a small detail to the broad mountain setting.
Several long-distance routes lead uphill, including the Swabian Alb North Edge Way and the Jakobsweg from Neresheim towards Santiago de Compostela. The Planetenweg, created in 2023, ends directly at the tower’s base. A nearby shelter belongs to the Swabian Albverein, which also owns the tower.
