Römerkeller

Römerkeller stands in Oberkochen, Germany, among fields where below-ground masonry preserves traces of a Roman rural estate. The visible remains belong to a villa rustica. This Roman country house likely served as a farmhouse or estate within a larger building complex. Surrounding fields provide a quiet setting for the archaeological remains.

Local students discovered and excavated the site in 1971 under expert guidance. The larger complex may have burned during the mid-third century. That destruction may connect with an Alamanni invasion, although the evidence remains uncertain. The remains form part of the Raetian Limes, the Roman frontier in Germany.

UNESCO recognizes the Raetian Limes as a World Heritage site. The cellar still lies below ground level beneath the surrounding fields.
