Heilig-Geist-Spital
Heilig-Geist-Spital stands in Nuremberg, with part of its historic complex extending across the Pegnitz River. Today, the building houses a Franconian restaurant and a senior home. Renovated interiors include barrier-free apartments and a sun terrace beside the water.
Konrad Gross, a wealthy Nuremberg patrician, established the institution between 1332 and 1339 for elderly and needy people. After 1500, Hans Beheim the Elder planned its extension over the river. From 1424 to 1796, the chapel safeguarded the imperial regalia, including the Holy Roman Empire’s crown jewels and Holy Lance.
Once a year, the Heiltumsweisung displayed those treasures to believers on the fourteenth day after Good Friday. For coronations, the regalia travelled to Frankfurt Cathedral. Regional specialties and local wines now accompany the river setting, while modern senior living spaces remain within the complex.
