Fernmeldeturm Nürnberg
Fernmeldeturm Nürnberg rises 292 metres above Nuremberg in southern Germany, making it Bavaria’s tallest structure. Its distinctive egg-shaped tower basket gives the landmark its nickname, the “Egg of Nuremberg”. Architect Erwin Heinle designed the structure, which took shape between 1977 and 1980.
The basket sits 185 metres above ground and carries FM, DAB, UMTS, pager, amateur radio, and microwave relay equipment. Telecommunications remain its central purpose, while the former rotating restaurant and observation platform have been closed since 1991. A wire antenna once ran along the shaft for megaradio broadcasts on 945 kHz in 2003. Since 2009, a 360-degree panorama camera has watched over Nuremberg from 194 metres.
Earlier medium-wave broadcasts came from Nuremberg-Kleinreuth between 1927 and 1969, before transmission moved to Dillberg. The tower’s most memorable detail remains its suspended, egg-shaped basket high above the city.
