Gerd Müller Statue
The Gerd Müller Statue stands inside Nördlingen’s historic city walls, at the corner of Bergerstraße and Herrengasse. The surrounding square bears the footballer’s name. Created by Herbert Deiss, the life-sized bronze sculpture shows Müller wearing the German national team jersey. A rectangular bronze base supports the figure above the paving.
The pose captures the moment before his decisive goal against the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final. His left leg bears his weight as he steadies himself. His right leg waits to strike, his left arm rises for balance, and his eyes fix on the bronze football below. Powerful thighs give the figure its strongest physical detail.
The Verschönerungsverband Nördlingen commissioned the work with support from the city, companies, private donors, the German Football Association, and FC Bayern Munich. Citizens changed its planned location. A petition moved it from outside the walls near Müller’s childhood home to this corner within them. The finished square later received its present name.
