Villa El Patio
Villa El Patio stands in Nice’s Parc-Impérial area, near the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. This three-storey house follows a Hispano-Mauresque design, with a central patio open to the sky and a roof terrace above.
Martin Masse, a notary clerk and Monaco’s consul in Nice, commissioned the villa. Aaron Messiah is associated with its architecture, while arches, decorative tiles, stucco and ironwork reflect influences from Spain and North Africa. The open courtyard brings light and air into the building, while thick walls support the practical side of its Mediterranean design.
The villa became a listed historic monument on 1 September 1999 and also carries France’s Patrimoine du XXe siècle label. Because it remains private, you can view its distinctive patio, terrace and decorative details only from outside.
