Place Masséna

Place Masséna anchors central Nice with red ochre buildings, Italian-style façades, and black-and-white checkerboard paving. The square carries the name of General André Masséna.

Joseph Vernier laid out the square beside the Paillon, before the covered river joined Nice’s older and newer districts. The former Paillon divided Nice across this location.

At the semicircular end, the Fountain of the Sun places Apollo among sculptures representing Earth, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Saturn. The Apollo statue forms the fountain’s central figure.

Jaume Plensa’s Conversation in Nice places contemporary sculptures on tall poles, where illumination changes their presence after dark. Palm trees and stone pines line the square.

Major streets meet here, including Avenue Jean Médecin and Boulevard Jean Jaurès. The T1 tram also runs across Place Masséna.

Pedestrian routes lead toward the Paillon Promenade, Albert I Garden, the old town, and the Promenade des Anglais. The Galeries Lafayette store stands behind a red façade.

Public events and everyday crossings give Place Masséna a civic role within Nice. The square is wheelchair accessible for visitors.
