Oratoire Sainte-Anne
Oratoire Sainte-Anne is a Catholic chapel in Nice’s Cimiez district, beside the former Roman city of Cemenelum and near the Roman arenas. A garden surrounds the building at the meeting point of two avenues in the neighbourhood.
The construction date remains unknown, although some stones inside were cut during Roman times. The first documented record dates from 1813, when the Mouraille family owned the chapel before the Musse family. Penitents’ confraternities gathered here before processing to Cimiez Monastery, passing the Roman arenas on their route.
Two plaques, one inside and one outside, commemorate the 163rd infantry regiment from Nice and Alpes-Maritimes. Around 3,600 soldiers and 40 officers were killed, wounded or reported missing in the Flirey sector during the First World War. Restoration renewed the interior and exterior in 2013, while work at the end of 2023 restored faded frescoes on the façade.
