Église Saint-Pons

Église Saint-Pons stands in Nice as a Catholic parish church whose history reaches back before the sixteenth century. Its medieval-village character appears in façades and bell towers shaped by architectural influences from Turin. Those forms make the church a visible landmark for visitors arriving in the city.

A restoration programme begun by Nice in 2016 treated the façades, main bell tower, original plaster, and protective coatings. The secondary bell tower also received attention after remaining unfinished during the original construction. Inside, work has focused on chapels, gilding, faux marble, pilasters, accessibility, and fire protection. Much of the interior decoration reflects the period around 1725, while the Oblates added later elements after taking over in 1835.

Two paintings by Giovanni Rocca, dated 1644, are among the artworks preserved inside. A polychrome Virgin Mary, carved from olive wood in 1775, stands about 1.60 metres tall and weighs more than 400 kilograms. Each year, the statue travels through a procession, while religious services and concerts continue within the church.
