Cascade du château

Cascade du château is an artificial waterfall on Castle Hill in Nice, surrounded by greenery above the old town and Mediterranean Sea. The park combines shaded paths, the sound of falling water, and a cool place to pause while exploring the hill. A nearby balustrade frames panoramic views across Nice and the Mediterranean, linking the engineered feature with the city’s coastal landscape.

Built in 1885, the waterfall served as a spillway for water carried by the Vésubie canal. The canal stretches about 32 kilometres and supplied Nice during the city’s nineteenth-century expansion. The Compagnie Générale des Eaux received responsibility for that supply in 1878, while park development on Castle Hill had begun during the middle of the century. This structure marked the culmination of those works and reflects the era’s practical engineering. Castle Hill had long held strategic and cultural importance, then became a public space for recreation. From the balustrade, old Nice and the sea appear together beyond the rushing water.
