Walther Collection

The Walther Collection stands in Neu-Ulm, Germany, as a private nonprofit centre for modern and contemporary photography and video art. Artur Walther established the collection around artistic research, collecting, exhibitions and publications.

A museum compound brings together the White Box, Green House and Black House, designed by Ulm-based Braunger Wörtz. The three-storey White Box contains the main galleries for thematic exhibitions and commissioned projects. A former residential home, the Green House presents small-format works in a more intimate setting. The bungalow-style Black House focuses on serial, performance and conceptual photography.

Exhibitions have connected modern German photography with artists and photographic practices from Africa and Asia. Events of the Self examined portraiture and social identity across three generations of African artists and photographers. Appropriated Landscapes explored war, migration, energy, architecture and memory across Southern African landscapes. Distance and Desire brought historical African photography into dialogue with contemporary artists engaging with the archive. The collection also reaches New York through a project space that has shown works including Jo Ratcliffe’s As Terras do Fim do Mundo.
