The Netherlands is a small country on the North Sea, pressed between Belgium and Germany. Much of the land lies below sea level, kept dry by dunes, dikes and a dense web of canals. Amsterdam rings its old centre with gabled houses along the water, and Rotterdam answers with glass towers beside the Maas. In spring, tulip fields and flat polder pastures fill the ground between the cities. At Kinderdijk, a row of eighteenth-century windmills stands where the rivers meet, built to pump water off the land.
