The von Werneck monument honours Reinhard Freiherr von Werneck, a major figure in Munich’s English Garden. The recorded spot is wheelchair accessible within the English Garden.

Von Werneck worked with Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell to extend and improve this historic urban park. His best-known addition was the Hirschau, a northern extension of 100 hectares.

That expansion helped shape the English Garden, which reaches from Munich’s city centre towards the northeastern city limits. Sir Benjamin Thompson designed the park in 1789.

He later became known as Count Rumford and created the park for Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria. The grounds follow the informal English garden style.

Paths and waterways connect the park’s landscape with structures including the Monopteros, a round temple by Leo von Klenze. The park also supports diverse wildlife and recreational activities.

Together, the monument, Hirschau, and surrounding landscape connect von Werneck’s work with Munich’s living park history. The name von Werneck links one person to 100 hectares of northern parkland.
