Stephanskirche am Alten Südfriedhof
Stephanskirche am Alten Südfriedhof stands in Munich’s Old South Cemetery as an early Baroque church by architect Georg Zwerger. Built between 1674 and 1677, it replaced a wooden chapel demolished during the Thirty Years’ War. Its restrained exterior presents a small onion dome rather than a traditional steeple.
Two small bronze bells sit inside the dome and still ring through a manually operated rope system. The cemetery church served the Old South Cemetery until its closure in 1944. It remains a branch church of St. Peter’s parish, where services continue to take place.
Inside, a richer Baroque character contrasts with the quiet exterior and reveals paintings from later renovations. Those renovations in the early 2000s replaced much of the original stucco, while some historic work remains. Wheelchair access adds a practical detail to this compact piece of Munich architectural history.
