St. Markus

St. Markus is a prominent Protestant church in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district, surrounded by the area’s academic and cultural life. Originally founded as a university church, it now welcomes community activities and cultural gatherings.

Music shapes much of the church’s character, with the Steinmeyer organ forming the centre of concerts and services. Gospel worship, classical concerts, Markus Choir performances, and visiting artists bring different audiences into the space. The interior received a substantial remodel between 2008 and 2010, emphasising simplicity, function, and accessibility.

The church continues to connect worship with Munich’s arts scene and neighbourhood life. Its Steinmeyer organ remains the detail many visitors remember, both for its sound and its planned comprehensive renovation.
