St. Johann Baptist

St. Johann Baptist stands in Munich’s Haidhausen district as a Roman Catholic church of Gothic Revival architecture. Matthias Berger designed the church in response to Haidhausen’s growing population. The project provided a larger parish church near the Isar when the original building could no longer accommodate worshippers. Its foundation stone dates from the 1840s. The main structure stood largely complete by 1858, while the tower reached completion in 1870. The west tower rises ninety-seven metres above Haidhausen. Its height makes the church a visible landmark in Munich’s skyline and a defining feature of the district. Wartime attacks caused serious damage to the church in 1945. Post-war rebuilding restored the building and gave its tower a new spire. The bell tower contains a small bronze bell cast in 1869. Later additions include cast-steel bells installed in 1948. The church’s Roman Catholic identity remains visible through its architecture, tower, and bell tradition. Its Gothic Revival form records Haidhausen’s nineteenth-century growth and the building’s reconstruction after wartime damage.
