Palais Arco-Zinneberg
Palais Arco-Zinneberg stands on the west side of Wittelsbacherplatz in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district. This neoclassical city palace has a rectangular, three-storey form beneath a hipped roof, with a stuccoed eastern façade facing the square.
Leo von Klenze designed the residence, built between 1824 and 1825 for the Arco-Zinneberg family. Thirteen window bays create a strict symmetry, while the central risalit brings together rusticated corner pilasters and a round-arched portal. A military hospital occupied the building during the First World War, and later alterations made room for the German Workshops.
Bombing in the Second World War caused severe damage, but reconstruction in the late 1950s preserved the original façade. Roderich Fick modernised the interiors, and the building now accommodates commercial activity as a protected historic monument. The central portal remains the façade’s clearest focal point from Wittelsbacherplatz.
