Monopteros

Monopteros stands in Munich’s English Garden as a circular Greek-style temple on a fifteen-metre artificial hill. Its Ionic columns and Kelheim limestone create a clear neoclassical silhouette above the surrounding trees. From this elevated setting, you see broad views across the park and towards Munich’s skyline. Earth and vegetation cover the brick foundation, giving the constructed mound a naturally wooded appearance.

Leo von Klenze designed the temple for King Ludwig I, and construction finished in 1836. The royal commission honoured Bavaria’s most respected rulers through classical architectural forms. During the 1960s, artists, hippies, and other free spirits gathered here within Munich’s alternative scene. The hill’s height remains its most striking detail, placing stone columns and open sky above the garden.
