Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt GmbH stands in Munich as a workshop for stained glass and mosaic art. Its work connects architectural craft with Roman Catholic churches across the world. Richly coloured scenes appear within frames shaped by pilasters and columns, reflecting the Romantic Munich Pictorial Style.
Joseph Gabriel Mayer founded the business in 1847 as the Institute for Christian Art, concentrating first on ecclesiastical furnishings. Royal commissions for Cologne and Regensburg cathedrals led to a stained-glass department in 1860. Joseph Mayer’s descendants later secured the titles Royal Bavarian Art Establishment in 1882 and Pontifical Institute of Christian Art in 1892. The family also restored cathedral windows in Munich after the World Wars, including those of the Frauenkirche.
The fifth generation continues the family business through modern glass and mosaic projects with artists worldwide. Collaborations include Brian Clarke and a mosaic created for the World Trade Center station in New York City. Italian Renaissance masters shaped the visual language behind those earlier windows, where architecture frames scenes of vivid colour.
