Justus Liebig
The Justus von Liebig monument stands at Maximiliansplatz in Munich, honouring a pioneering figure in chemistry. The Carrara marble statue shows Liebig seated in a thoughtful pose, with an expressive likeness. Wheelchair access makes this historical sculpture reachable for visitors exploring central Munich.
Michael Wagmüller began the work, and his student Wilhelm von Rümann completed it after Wagmüller’s death. The monument was unveiled on 6 August 1883, marking its place in Munich’s nineteenth-century history. Soon after installation, silver nitrate accidentally left black spots across the marble surface. Chemists including Max von Pettenkofer removed the blemishes and restored the sculpture’s appearance.
During the Second World War, the statue suffered serious damage, including the loss of its head. Restoration returned the figure’s details and preserved its distinctive, contemplative expression.
