James M. Greene

James M. Greene is commemorated by a memorial sign in Solln, a Munich suburb near the Isar Valley. He flew as an American pilot during the Second World War. His aircraft joined a U.S. Air Force bombing raid against armament factories before being shot down over the valley. He parachuted near Solln after the attack.

Local Nazi officials captured and murdered him after he landed, violating the protections owed to prisoners of war. The memorial recalls this forgotten wartime crime. Dieter Reiter, Susanna Tausendfreund, and members of Greene’s family attended its inauguration. His family’s presence connects the small sign with the person whose death it remembers.
